Kitchen Cabinet Care Guide
Quality kitchen cabinets can last 20–30 years with proper care. Here's how to protect your investment and keep your cabinetry looking great.
Daily and Weekly Cleaning
Regular cleaning prevents buildup that is much harder to remove later.
- Wipe cabinet faces with a soft damp cloth after cooking — grease residue builds quickly
- Use mild dish soap diluted in water, not harsh cleaners or solvents
- Dry surfaces immediately — standing water damages all finish types
- Never use abrasive sponges or scrubbing pads on painted or stained cabinetry
Care by Cabinet Finish Type
Different finishes require slightly different care approaches.
- Painted cabinets — mild soap and water only; touch up chips promptly before moisture penetrates
- Stained cabinets — mild soap and water, followed by a cabinet-specific oil or conditioner twice a year
- Thermofoil/laminate — never use harsh chemicals; avoid excess heat from small appliances near surfaces
- Natural wood (raw finish) — requires periodic conditioning with wood oil; more sensitive to moisture
Hinge and Hardware Adjustment
Cabinet doors drift out of alignment over time — this is normal and easy to fix.
- Most European-style concealed hinges have three adjustment screws: up/down, left/right, in/out
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to realign doors — adjust one axis at a time
- Drawer slides can be shimmed or tightened if drawers sag or stick
- Tighten cabinet knob and pull screws annually — they back out with use
Preventing Common Damage
Most cabinet damage is preventable.
- Use the ventilation fan when cooking — steam and grease are the biggest enemies of cabinet finishes
- Don't store items directly against cabinet bases without protective mats
- Keep small appliances that generate heat (toasters, coffee makers) away from cabinet faces
- Fix leaking faucets and supply lines immediately — water damage to base cabinets is expensive
